About Us

NOURISHMENT FOR INDEPENDENT MINDS

Scotonomics is a platform for rethinking economics from the ground up. We believe economic literacy is vital for an engaged and informed society—and that starts with questioning the economic narratives we’re told every day.

Founded in Scotland and inspired by the principles of wellbeing, sustainability, and equity, Scotonomics explores how our economic system really works—and how it could work better. Through our interviews, events, videos and posts, we uncover the connections between the economy, society, and the environment, helping people make sense of the big issues shaping our lives.

We challenge outdated economic thinking and offer fresh perspectives rooted in ecological limits, public purpose, and inclusive prosperity. Whether you’re new to economics or a seasoned professional, Scotonomics offers a space to learn, discuss, and imagine new economic possibilities for Scotland.

Let’s build a better understanding of the economy—together.

WILLIAM THOMSON
WILLIAM THOMSONFOUNDER OF SCOTONOMICS
William studied neoclassical economics for one year at Dundee University in the 1990s, dropping the subject for something that seemed more practical and real-world and ending up with a Management Studies degree. He then worked in the commercial departments of a few financial services trade associations in London during and after the financial crisis. He then set up various events and training businesses. His interest in economics was rekindled during the Scottish independence referendum in 2014 when the YES campaign seemed to be getting into a mess, especially around their decision to try to form a currency union with the country they wanted to leave.

After several years of self-study, William set up SCOTONOMICS as a vehicle to disseminate information on economic issues that seemed to be rarely discussed in the mainstream, including the impact of the economy on the climate, inequality and how money really works.

In 2022, William completed an MSC in the Green Economy and MEcon in the Economics of Sustainability.

Based in Dunblane, William writes regular blog posts are articles on economics in various publications including The National newspaper in Scotland and the Scottish Left Review.

KAIRIN VAN SWEEDEN
KAIRIN VAN SWEEDENFOUNDER OF SCOTONOMICS
In 1983, Kairin studied Hotel Reception and Bookkeeping in Aberdeen and then in 1990, she also studied Furniture Design at Edinburgh School of Art. However, she decided a designer’s life wasn’t for her, so in 1992 she left Edinburgh to work in Glasgow, London and Eindhoven in The Netherlands. She returned to Scotland in 2006 and a few years later started a degree at the University of Dundee, graduating in 2015 with a BSc(Hons) in Anatomical Sciences.

In 2016, she returned to Edinburgh, set up her own personal training business and became Convener of Leith SNP and Yes Edinburgh North and Leith. Kairin began researching economics in 2018 and subsequently became Director of Modern Money Scotland in 2020. Later that year, she moved back to Aberdeen to be closer to her family and started recording SCOTONOMICS with William.

In May 2022, Kairin was elected as a City Councillor for Tillydrone, Seaton and Old Aberdeen, which is where she was brought up and went to school. She thinks being a Councillor is the busiest job she has ever done but has managed to write a few articles for The National.

What we have planned

We have two main objectives for 2025

1. To further the real-world economic understanding across Scotland.

2. To encourage debate and reflection by the current Scottish government on its vision for a post-independence Scottish economy.
